People working in cold store environments\nface health hazards related to low temperatures. These hazards\u00ad<\/sub>\u00ad\naccording to their symptoms are categorized in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Freezing injuries<\/strong> such as frostbite or\nskin damage when there is extensive contact with metal or plastic surfaces with\nbare skin<\/li>
  2. Non-freezing injuries<\/strong> such as numbness,\nsensitivity to the cold, swelling or pain when there is prolonged exposure of\ntissues in cold <\/li>
  3. Hypothermia,<\/strong> drop of body temperature\nexpressed with shivering, blue tone skin, cold hands and feet<\/li>
  4. Pre-existing medical conditions <\/strong>that can\nbe triggered by exposure to cold e.g. asthma or other respiratory conditions,\ncirculatory conditions, arthritis, musculoskeletal diseases, metabolic\ndisorders such as thyroid or diabetes. If any of these conditions occur,\nemployers should be informed beforehand in order to proceed to further\nassessment.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    For work in cold store environments it is\nessential that the following are provided to the working personnel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Training on cold hazards and\nidentification of cold stress symptoms<\/li>
    • Easy accessible warming rest\nareas for sufficient breaks<\/li>
    • Workers\u2019 rotation<\/li>
    • First Aid facilities<\/li>
    • Suitable personal protective\nequipment:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      – for chill environment\ndown to -5\u00b0C, including thermal undergarments, quilted coverall or suit,\ngloves, safety boots or shoes, head protection<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      – for frozen\nenvironment -5\u00b0C and below, including thermal undergarments, quilted coverall\nor suit with knee protection, cold store gloves, insulated safety boots and\nthermal socks, thermal lined helmet or balaclava<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Safety tips:          <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. It is essential to wear the\nright clothing than too many layers of clothing. Thermal underwear allow the\nbody to breath and avoid sweating<\/li>
      2. Choose the right size of\nclothing, not too small nor too tight, to allow blood flow<\/li>
      3. Adjust cuffs or closures to\nallow moisture to get out<\/li>
      4. Do not leave bare skin exposed\nto cold temperature or wind and avoid touching metal or plastic surfaces with\nbare skin<\/li>
      5. Avoid drinking alcohol or\nsmoking because they affect the body\u2019s ability to retain heat<\/li>
      6. Avoid drinking tea or coffee as\ncaffeine acts as a diuretic and can lead to dehydration<\/li>
      7. Drink enough water, hot soup or\nhot chocolate<\/li>
      8. Prescribed or non-prescribed\ndrugs can affect body temperature regulation<\/li>
      9. Stay alert for early signs of\nhypothermia. Cold hands and feet, extreme shivering or drowsiness call for\nimmediate transfer to a warm rest area<\/li>
      10. Keep an eye on your colleagues\nfor freezing symptoms and request immediate medical assistance<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
